Staff are any businesses biggest resource so it is essential that payroll calculations are carried out on time and accurately, as non-compliance can lead to both a dissatisfied workforce and financial penalties from HMRC.
From 6 April 2013 employers had to start reporting PAYE information to HMRC in real time, the biggest change to payroll processing since PAYE was introduced in 1944. You may see this referred to as Real Time Information - or RTI.
Under the new rules employers have to:
• send payroll details to HMRC whenever a payroll is run, before they pay the employee (with a few limited exceptions)
• use payroll software to send this information electronically as part of their routine payroll process
Penalties may be imposed on employers who fail to meet their RTI obligations by the deadlines.
